A beautifully sunny day and a scruffy pond – bliss. When we moved into this house nearly a year ago there was a few inches of water left in the pond – some goldfish hanging in there somehow. One of the first tasks here was to fill it up and see what happened – life for whatever was left alive within. Well, if those fish could have leapt out and hugged us, they would have. Bless them. The pondskaters multiplied and the plants slowly started to grow again. Winter was not especially cold this year and we just left the pond alone, letting any weed grow to allow some shelter should things get chilly.
And the spring has brought a wealth of fresh life, from the rampant Green Alkanet offering a seeming ceaseless supply of nectar to all kinds of bees and buzzy things, to the small colony of newts doing what they do when visiting ponds, a frog – not seen as much as heard – the oddest sound, rather lovely, the fish producing baby fish, and red damsel-flies- beautiful. And both frog and toad spawn – resulting in several hundred tadpoles which seem quite happy and bold – we may regret this during the next mating season – where are the predators? And who knows what else will appear as the year progresses. I could sit and watch all day long and will utterly enjoy that I can sit out for half an hour or so at a time when the sun can shine on my back while I work…
