Having left it a couple of years too long to get my eyes checked (I forget and other things take financial priority), it was time. On the spur of the moment, while collecting my daughter’s first glasses, I booked myself in. Of course I needed a new prescription. My poor girl came with me and probably wished she hadn’t, not being the most patient of people…
Starting in the middle of the range of glasses Boots had to offer, I tried all sorts, stating a desire for something retro in style. Up and down and trying on plenty until a pair seemed to suit me well enough, sitting on my face without drawing attention (even if there is pink involved – ich!). And then I moved to the right a little further, to the Prada section and wish I had not. Of course I had to try them on, this pair of almost sexy, cheeky, and definitely not unobtrusive specs. They did not look quite right on me, of course, with no make-up, bedraggled hair, fat and dowdy. For these glasses I would need to do my face and wear nicer clothes and get a hair cut, even dye the greys… And with those glasses I would have and they would have done me the world of good, I think. For although I had a good month with my business, I could not justify the top-end varifocal lenses AND the designer frames. I was sensible. And I wonder for how long I will regret that…
Mind you, the quality of the glasses were not what one might expect, and I’d really rather not have an obvious label on the arms. What I will do is take the feeling that stirred when I tried them on and build upon that. While at the docs last week a lady came in, of similar age, with stunning red hair in a lovely short cut. She looked wonderful. Purple, perhaps…? 😉
And perhaps, if the business continues to thrive…
I had a ridiculously expensive quote for varifocals from Vision Express a while back. I ended up decided to stick with contact lenses and buy a pair of cheap reading glasses. But my distance glasses prescription needed updating, so I had a look aonline and found Glasses Direct.
I have to say it was a pretty slick process. You can choose 4 frames to be sent out at a time to try on, and once you’ve chosen the ones you want, just send in the prescription that your optician is obliged to provide and a few days later your new specs arrive.
What’s best, though, is that the cost of 2 new pairs of glasses was about a quarter the cost of a single pair of varifocals at vision express! I know it’s not a like for like comparison, but a pair of varifocals from them would have cost about half of what VE wanted.
Worth a look, I would say.
So enjoyed reading this. I too need new glasses and I have the red hair and I love purple! Keep them coming, I’m a huge fan.
